Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
1001 AM MDT Wed May 28 2025
.DISCUSSION...A ridge will remain over the area with a system to
the east today. This will bring a slight chance of thunderstorms
over the west central ID mountains, Owyhee Mountains and along
the NV border this afternoon and again on Thursday.
Thunderstorms will be capable of producing erratic outflow winds
up to 40 mph this afternoon and 50 mph Thursday afternoon,
mainly over the southwest Idaho highlands and Owyhee Mountains.
A cold front will move through on Thursday afternoon with
breezy west-northwest winds up to 30 mph. Stronger winds up to
45 mph possible over Baker County near Huntington and Farewell
Bend Thursday afternoon and evening. Warmer temperatures on
Saturday with the highest temperatures of the season. Some
lower valleys will see temperatures near 100F on Saturday
afternoon. Then a cold front moves through Sunday bringing much
cooler temperatures and unsettled conditions lasting into
Wednesday. No updates to the forecast.
&&
.AVIATION...VFR. Mostly clear, except isolated showers and
thunderstorms along the Nevada border between Wed/18Z and Thu/00Z.
Outflow gusts to 35 kt near thunderstorms. Surface winds: variable
less than 10 kt. Winds aloft at 10kft MSL: SW-NW 5-15 kt.
KBOI...VFR. Surface winds: SE less than 10 kt becoming NW in the
afternoon.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night...An upper ridge will
bring warmer temperatures to the region today as highs reach
into the lower 90s in some valley locations from Mountain Home
to Ontario, including Boise. There is some limited moisture
available for convection, including areas along the NV border
and east of McCall where there is less than a 20 percent chance
of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The
storms will be capable of producing gusty outflow winds to 40
mph. An upper trough and attendant cold front arrive Thursday
afternoon. Slight warming will occur ahead of the front,
including on the Snake River Plain where highs in the low-mid
90s are expected. There is also a chance (less than 25 percent)
of showers and thunderstorms in the SW Idaho highlands and West
Central Idaho Mountains ahead of the front in the afternoon.
Once again, gusty outflow winds are possible with the storms.
Breezy northwest winds develop in the wake of the frontal
passage during the afternoon that will persist into the evening.
An upper ridge builds back into the area on Friday for dry
conditions and a continuation of above-normal temperatures.
LONG TERM...Saturday through Wednesday...The warming trend
continues into Saturday ahead of a developing upper trough
across the PacNW. Models have trended slightly warmer, pushing
highs well into the 90s and close to records (including Boise)
at many locations. The trough development is depicted in all
the models, so confidence is increasing toward a significant
pattern change to cool, breezy and showery conditions early to
mid next week.
